Carrie Stanley

My work is focused on the immersive and visceral practise of oil painting along with a love of line and drawn elements. I’m primarily a figurative painter seeking moments of abstraction to take me beyond the visual and into the struggle of making the work. My colours are psychological responses to my subjects and I often work in an automatic or flow state letting the painting determine it’s own outcome. My subject matter is rooted in family and personal history using a rich source of analogue negatives, memory, music and spoken word. These source materials are just a start for the physical journey of making which is where my passion lies; the battle or dance of smearing, scraping and splashing the painting into existence.
