Sonia Martin

British artist Sonia Martin lives and works in London, and after attending Byam Shaw and City & Guilds Art Schools, she completed an MA in printmaking at Camberwell College of Art.

Her figurative images have been exhibited widely in the UK and abroad, including at the Royal Academy Summer Show, the Barbican, the Contemporary Art Society, and the Bankside Gallery.

She has been awarded artist residencies in Spain, India, Ireland, Bolivia and Mexico, and in 2017 she became an elected member of the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers.

In 2021 she was a recipient of a Pollock-Krasner award (New York), and a prize winner at the London Art Biennale. In 2022 she was shortlisted for the Contemporary British Painting Prize.

Her work is held in public collections including University of the Arts, London; Southampton City Art Gallery, Hampshire; Keate Family Arts Trust, Cambridge; Morley College Art Collection, London; Lady Margaret Hall College, Oxford; New Hall College Art Collection, Cambridge; Ashmolean Museum, Oxford; Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge; Victoria & Albert Museum, London; and Museo d’arte di Chianciano, Italy.

 

Arising from her response to the past and to the present, Sonia Martin's subjects are a merging of the here-and-now and the imagination. In her work she expresses a female perspective to her subject matter which encompasses themes of memory, mortality and the search for freedom.
